Adrian, Michigan - Today was the first day of the WHAC Outdoor Championships for the men's track and field team. Despite having fewer events than tomorrow, today provided many highlights with the Saints capturing two conference titles and having one all time Aquinas mark.
Aquinas currently sits fifth in the conference with 35 points. Siena Heights leads the way with 58 points after day one.
In the first scored running event of the afternoon, the men's 4x800 meter relay was poised for greatness. The team of
Caleb Hodgkinson,
Will Finch,
Will Westveer, and
Rob Lohr ran 7:40 to secure the conference title and ten points. They bested the second place Lawrence Tech Blue Devils by three seconds.
The second conference title came from the final running event of the day, the 10000 Meter Run.
Connor Callahan captured the conference title running 31:31. By securing the victory he earned AQ ten points. AQ racked up the points in this event with three more scorers.
Andrew Ireland came next when he finished in the runner up position, running 31:58 for eight more points.
Carson Lafferty (33:01) and
Edward Frey (33:16) finished sixth and seventh to earn five collective points.
Next in the 100 Meter Dash,
Nate White continued his hot streak taking third in the preliminary round of the event. His time of 10.66 lands him fourth on the AQ All-Time list. He jumps over
Lawrence Young (2022) and Sam Freeman (2017) to debut on the list.
Jake Van Tassell continued to clear hurdles in fast fashion when he competed in the prelims of 110 Hurdles. He enters tomorrow's final ranked eighth with a time of 15.30.
Turning to the field events,
Joe Farage and
Jesunifemi Ojutalayo were both able to squeak out one point in their respective events. Ojutalyo jumped 1.90 meters in the high jump while Farage vaulted four meters in the pole vault.
AQ returns to O'Laughlin Stadium for Day Two of the WHAC Championships tomorrow, May 5. Field events kick of the day at 12:00 PM, while running events begin at 1:30 PM.
