(RV) Saints Continue Winning Ways With Sweep at Rival Cornerstone

The Aquinas women's volleyball team won by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-20

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The (RV) Aquinas women's volleyball team marched right into Mol Arena Wednesday night (Sept. 20) and swept its crosstown rivals Cornerstone by set scores of 25-19, 25-17, 25-20.

The Saints have now won five straight matches to improve to 14-3 overall (4-0 WHAC) this season, while the Golden Eagles faltered to 6-8 overall (1-3 WHAC).

AQ nearly doubled up Cornerstone in total points scored in the matched (60-31) as the Saints hit an impressive .302 percentage as team with 42 kills on 96 attack attempts. Aquinas also held a huge advantage in aces (9-1) and total blocks (9-1).

And yet, early on, Cornerstone looked dangerous by scoring the first four points of the match. AQ then used its own 4-0 run to grab the lead for the first time and hold a 10-8 edge. The Golden Eagles never managed to draw even again and dropped the first frame, 25-19. The Saints scored their last five points on kills from Samee Teachworth (2), Jenna Lee (2) and Abbi Perkins.

The second set was last tied at 10-10 before Aquinas went on rampage with a decisive 10-0 run with setter Lydia Harper behind the service line. Harper had three aces during the run. Perkins also provided three kills and Lee added two kills along with a solo block. AQ's final seven points of the 25-17 second set win were kills.

Neither team lead by more than three points in the third set until Aquinas picked up a big block from Lauren Chioini and Harper to pull ahead 20-16. The Golden Eagles clawed back to be down 22-20 before the Saints closed things out with three straight points. Perkins put down her team-high 10th kill, then tag-teamed a block with Chioini. On match point, Michelle Domey ended things with another a solo block.

Domey (.533 hitting percentage) and Lee (.333) each finished nine kills. Teachworth was just one behind with eight (.615). Harper padded her stat line with 34 assists, seven digs, three aces and a block. Cece Pelak also had three aces. AQ libero Jordyn Carlyle, the reigning WHAC Defender of the Week, had two aces to go with a match-high 15 digs.

Aquinas currently ranks fourth in the NAIA this season in total aces (159) and total blocks (149).

With the sweep, the Saints snapped a 13-match road winless streak against the Golden Eagles. Prior to Wednesday night, Aquinas hadn't won at Cornerstone since Sept. 29, 2010.

AQ returns to action this weekend with a pair of WHAC matches at home. The Saints take on UNOH this Friday (Sept. 22) at 7 p.m. and followed that up with a showdown against No. 22 Indiana Tech on Saturday (Sept. 23) at 2 p.m.
