Grand Rapids, Mich. — Hours after learning the Aquinas women's soccer team had moved up from No. 7 to No. 4 in the latest NAIA Coaches' Poll, the Saints showed UM-Dearborn why with a convincing 7-0 home win Wednesday night (Sept. 27) at the AQ Athletic Field.
The Wolverines fell to 4-4 overall (0-2 WHAC) with the defeat, while AQ improved to 7-0-1 overall (2-0 WHAC).
The Saints are unbeaten in their last 41 regular season conference games with a 40-0-1 record dating back to 2019.
Aquinas got goals from all over the pitch on Wednesday. A few close tap-ins as well as a couple long distance strikes.
Macy Hollingsworth ignited the goal scoring party in the 10th minute. Her second goal of the season was crossed in by
Brittney Probst.Â
A well-worked set piece produced AQ's second goal in the 26th minute.
Ingrid Hentemann lofted in a cross that was flicked on by Hollingsworth's head to
Sandra Segovia crashing the goal. Segovia finished for her second goal of the season as well.
Sydney Shenk, the reigning WHAC Offensive Player of the Week, netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season in the 32nd minute before
Candela Vigil-Escalera smashed in her first goal of the season from roughly 30 yards out.
The Saints held a 4-0 lead at halftime.
Three more goals followed in the second half. Two of which came from
Stephanie Ramos — assisted by
Marie-Louise Abild and
Laia Cunill — and the other from a difficult angle that Cunill managed to loft the ball up and over the UM-Dearborn goalkeepers' outstretched arms.
It was the first multi-goal game for Ramos. She scored her second and AQ's final goal in the 88th minute, just 29 seconds after Cunill found the back of the net.
As for the AQ defense, it was business as usual despite some of the regular starters getting pulled out in favor of rest because of the scoreline. The Saints outshot UM-Dearborn 29-3 (14-1 shots on target). AQ sophomore goalie
Kayla Shuk, who was named the WHAC Defensive Player of the Week on Monday (Sept. 25), made one save to earn her sixth shutout this season.
The Saints have kept five clean sheets in a row and haven't given up a goal in 476 minutes of game time.
Defender
Jess Graham was the only Saint to play a full 90 minutes. In total, 23 Saints got game time with four of AQ's goal coming from players who started on the bench.
Aquinas travels to Madonna next to face the Crusaders on Saturday (Sept. 30) with an afternoon contest scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. AQ is 6-1 against Madonna in their last seven meeting with the lone loss being the heartbreaking 2-1 overtime defeat in the 2020-21 WHAC Tournament championship game.
