Grand Rapids, Mich. — This week the Aquinas men's golf team headed to Augusta to compete in the WHAC Fall Preview at Stoatin Brae Golf Club. AQ shot an overall of 317, placing them 10th overall at the competition. The following day the Saints competed in match play against Cleary. Aquinas would only claim two individual victories, ending with a result of a 3-2 loss.
The stoke play tournament would be claimed by Lawrence Tech with a dominant showing. The Blue Devils would shoot an impressive 285 overall, which is just a single stroke over par for the course.
AQ senior
Matt Denhartigh placed fifth and shot the best of the Saints with an even score for the course (71). Senior
Dominic Luciani followed by three strokes (74), while tying for 13th.
Freshman
Caleb Blackburn and sophomore
Logan Wolters both stamped home an 86 and tied for 50th overall.
Sophomore
Anthony Lalomia was just a stroke behind Blackburn and Wolters, shooting an 87 and tying for 56th.
The match play event the following day saw Aquinas face off against Cleary. In match play, each golfer is paired with a competitor from the opposing school, this structure mimics five head-to-head matches.
Luciani and Wolters would be victorious in their head-to-head, but Lalomia, Blackburn, and Denhartigh fell short. The Saints lost to Cleary 3-2. This came after AQ defeated Madonna in match play.
The men are back in action at 9 a.m. this Friday (Sept. 29) at Farmington Hills Golf Club in Farmington Hills, hosted by Lawrence Tech.
