Two Second Half Goals Push Lourdes Past (RV) AQ on Senior Day

Radovic made seven saves in his return to action.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The (RV) Aquinas men's soccer team celebrated their 12 seniors Saturday afternoon (Oct. 19) prior to taking on the Lourdes Gray Wolves on senior day. The game was evenly matched throughout its entirety, but two second half Lourdes goals proved to be the difference. With AQ unable to quite find a rebuttal, the Gray Wolves managed to upset the Saints on senior day.

The result moves Aquinas to 10-4 this season with a 6-3 conference record.

Lourdes 2, (RV) Aquinas 0

The fixture quickly got off to a quick start with Aquinas generating several shots and corners in the first 15 minutes. The evenly-matched teams both created several scoring chances on both sides of the pitch, but neither side was quite able to break through.

Lourdes nearly broke the tied near the end of the first half, but a nice defensive save from Joe Lockey kept the Gray Wolves off the scoreboard. As the first half drew to a close, the score remained 0-0.

The second half started to get a bit chippy between the two sides as the Gray Wolves closed in on offense. Lourdes University held possession in AQ's half for a good portion of the start of the second half and eventually found a man through to make the score 1-0. In the 62nd minute, Ivan Radovic made an incredible fully-stretched save to keep the deficit at just one goal.

AQ responded with several chances, but could not quite find its way past the Lourdes defense. The Saints had their best chance in the 78th minute when they were awarded a penalty kick. Joshua Clemitson put the ball on the spot, but unfortunately sent the ball wide to keep the score at 1-0. Lourdes immediately capitalized with a counterattack and scored once more to extend the lead to two.

The Saints nearly cut the deficit down to just one goal in the 82nd after Ricardo Rittersberger put a bullet of a header of target, but Lourdes made the save to keep AQ off the scoreboard. There was some back-and-forth over the final few minutes of play, but the score ultimately remained 2-0 come the final whistle.

By the Numbers
  • Both keepers made seven saves with Lourdes managing to put two additional shots on target.
  • Both teams had 20 total shots and Lourdes narrowly led with eight corners to AQ's six.
  • This is the first time Lourdes has beaten the Saints since 2019.
