Rocket League Closes Out Regular Season Play on Top

AQRL defeats both Cornerstone and Concordia to close out regular season play

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas College Rocket League team was active on Monday (Oct. 21) with two best-of-five series with the respective likes of Cornerstone and Concordia. AQ first went up against Cornerstone with a 6:30 p.m. contest start and then returned to the electric pitch at 8:00 p.m. to faceoff with Concordia. After both contests came to a finish, AQ was on top in both series. Finishing out their regular season with a flurrish.

Aquinas 3, Cornerstone 1

The first game of this series saw a strong showing from the Saints as they piled the goals high with a 5-1 difference as time expired.

But Cornerstone showed some life and pushed back in the second as they earned the win 2-1, splitting the opening games.

The Saints returned to the drawing board and reworked their gameplan, and to their credit it showed. AQ secured game three with a 7-2 finish.

Entering the fourth game, the Saints were hot and their play went on to show it as they once again piled the goals once again, winning the game 6-1. Giving Aquinas the overall win with a 3-1 scoreline.

By the Numbers
  • Max Aguilar-Ochoa once again led the Saints offense with 10 goals, two assists, two saves, and 20 total shots
  • 10 goals in one series is a season high for Aguilar-Ochoa
  • Steve Garvey tallied three goals, four saves, and 17 total shots
  • Juan Garcia Valdes also had a season high offensive performance with six goals, eight assists, five saves, and 14 shots
Aquinas 3, Concordia 2

Entering their second series of the night Aquinas looked to continue their performance and walk away on the evening with two wins.

Concordia refocused the Saints as the Cardinals went on to take the first game handily, 6-2.

That opening loss anchored AQ as they regrouped and relaunched their offensive. Aquinas came back swinging as they took game two 5-2.

Each team opened each game with a new burst of energy as they battled to regain control. Game three saw CUAA reconquer the mountain with a 4-0 win.

Game four saw the Saints rebuttal, the game was close but AQ still managed to narrowly get away with a 1-0 win.

Aquinas now stood at the door of game five. The last time the team face a game five situation was for the very first match of the season six weeks ago.

The Saints have proven to be ice cold when faced with game five and this match shared that result. AQ finished of the series with a 3-1 victory, giving them the 3-2 overall win.

With tonight's two wins, the Aquinas Rocket League team finishes their regular season 6-5.
