Women's Basketball Earns First Win of 2024 Over Goshen College

Six different Saints connected from beyond the arc for a balanced attack.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Aquinas women's basketball team returned to the Sturrus Center Saturday night (Nov. 16) for their third home in the past eight days. AQ entered the game on a three-game losing streak and was looking to snap that streak. AQ shot lights out in the first quarter against the Goshen Maple Leafs, setting the tone for the remainder of the contest. The Saints held that lead throughout the entirety of the contest to clinch their first win of the 2024-25 campaign.

The win shifted AQ's record to 1-3 while the Maple Leafs fell to 3-2.

Aquinas 76, Goshen 65

The Saints lit up the scoreboard in the first quarter, scoring 23 points. AQ quickly looked to stretch the floor and had five different Saints score a total of six threes. Aquinas shot an outstanding 50% from the field and 66.7% from three to take a 23-10 lead after the first ten minutes of play.

Ashlyn Wilkes' third three of the game early in the second quarter extended AQ's lead to 16 points. However, from there, Goshen began to build some momentum. The Maple Leafs strung together a 19-4 run that brought the visiting team back within just one point. Brynn Reams converted a layup and scored an and-one to give AQ a bit of positive energy going into halftime.

The Saints got back to the three-point shot in the third quarter and it immediately paid off. Isabel Reemsnyder connected to start the half and Wilkes splashed her fourth of the game to put AQ ahead by eight early in the third.

Both teams traded buckets until the end of the third quarter when Reemsnyder got the hot hand. She scored back-to-back threes and then scored a pair of free throws to put AQ ahead by 13 in just over a minute.

The game slowed down a bit in the fourth quarter, with AQ holding a 10-point lead with just under five minutes to play. However, Goshen quickly turned the tides, going on a seven-point run to bring the game back to a one-possession game. AQ responded defensively, holding Goshen scoreless as Aquinas began to rebuild the lead. After several defensive stops and a series of free throws, AQ celebrated its first win of the season with a score of 76-65.
