Saints Fall in Tough Matchup Against MSU

Izzy Buckett records a remarkable 66 saves.

Byron Center, Mich. – The Aquinas women's hockey team took on Michigan State Saturday night in a home matchup at Southside Ice Arena. The Saints fought hard and held the Spartans to a tie for the first period. However, an experienced MSU side took hold of the contest in the second period and never looked back. Michigan State tallied five goals in both the second and third periods for an 11-1 victory.

The result of the contest moves the Saints to a 0-3-0 record this season.

The Spartans offense and defense were unmatched as they took the ice. They were the first to score, however, they were held off until there was less than five minutes in the first period. The Saints followed that up with a goal in the final 15 seconds as Julia DeHondt scored an unassisted goal for her first of the season.

A powerplay in the second period opened the door for the Spartans, giving the visitors the lead halfway through the period. That goal shifted the momentum for MSU and the Spartans capitalized. The Spartans tallied four more goals in the second period for a 6-1 lead.

The script remained the same in the third period as MSU managed to find five more goals to end the game with a final tally of 11-1 in favor of MSU.

By the Numbers:
  • Izzy Buckett recorded an incredible 66 saves over the course of the contest as MSU totaled 77 shots on net.
  • Michigan State has had AQ's number for the past few seasons. The last time the Saints got the best of the Spartans was in 2017.
