Grand Rapids, Mich. — The No. 5-rated Aquinas College women's soccer team faced off in the quarterfinals of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Tournament on Wednesday (Nov. 6) with the Crusaders of Madonna. The first half saw a hard-fought standstill which resulted in a 0-0. However, the Saints found their stride in the second half and went on to notch four goals to finish the contest 4-0. This win pushes AQ into the Semifinals of the tournament, where AQ will face off against Lourdes.
Aquinas 4, Madonna 0
The first half started with a resounding clash as the Saints and Crusaders met at a stalemate as the teams battled for dominance. The ball traveled up and down the pitch as both teams managed to disparage the others driving attempts. Aquinas managed to recoup some drive and began to increase their volume of shots.
But the horn of the first half came and went, bringing the action to a pause with a 0-0 standing.
The second half saw the Saints break through and begin to connect.
Madison Slezinski broke the drought of the evening with a pass from
Olivia Bowling in the 59th minute. With the opening goal, the Saints had found their stride and gained a better hand on the contest.
AQ's second goal came in the 70th minute from
Marie-Louise Abild as she was assisted by Slezinski. The next Aquinas goal was by result of a corner kick as
Avery Tack headed in the lob from Abild in the 73rd minute.
The fourth and final goal of the evening was found by
Olivia Bowling with sequence passing from Abild and
Sandra Segovia in the 78th minute.
No further scoring occurred in the contest, and with the final horn the Saints had secured their ticket to the Semifinals of the WHAC Tournament.
