Gregwer Records Double-Double in Tough Game Against #3 IWU

AQ kept the score close throughout the first quarter before the experienced Wildcats pulled away.

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The Aquinas women's basketball team queued up their second game of the season on Friday evening (Nov. 8) against the number-three-rated team in the country in Indiana Wesleyan University. The Saints kept the game close in the first quarter, but the nationally-rated Wildcats began to run away in the second quarter. At the end of regulation, IWU commanded an 82-50 victory.

#3 Indiana Wesleyan 82, Aquinas 50

Aquinas was hot in the first quarter after falling behind 12-5 halfway through the quarter. Avery DePagter, Claire Gregwer, and Leah French combined for the next three consecutive buckets to bring the score back within two. Gregwer then connected on a three of her own to take a 15-14 lead. A pair of Leah French free throws then extended the lead to three with just over two minutes to play.

IWU responded with a three of its own before scoring a free throw with just seconds left to reclaim the lead. However, AQ was within one point of a team receiving first-place votes in the NAIA.

The back-and-forth continued into the beginning of the second quarter until the Wildcats began to pull away. IWU outscored the Saints 21-9 in the second quarter to claim a 13-point advantage.

After halftime, the number three-rated Wildcats went on a massive run to effectively seal the game. IWU went on a 19-4 run to take a 28-point lead. The game slowed down a bit after that run, but Indiana Wesleyan still managed to slightly build its lead throughout the remaining third and fourth quarters. At the final buzzer, the scoreboard read IWU 82, AQ 50.
