Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. – Aquinas faced off against the Lake Superior State Lakers this past weekend (Feb. 9-10) for a two-game road series. The Saints scored a pair of goals in both games, but the Lakers outpaced AQ in both contests.
The two results moved Aquinas to 3-16-1 on the season with a 1-12-0 conference record.
Game 1: Lake Superior State 4, Aquinas 2
Maeva Lichtensteiger's hot streak continued to start the game. She netted the first goal of the game and her second of the season to break the 0-0 tie in the first period.
McKenna Kaczor assisted the goal with 11:37 remaining on the clock.
Penalty trouble caught up to the Saints shortly after Lichtensteiger's goal. The Lakers had two power plays in the first period and scored on both of them to take the lead.
Kadynce Romijn played well in net, pushing aside the Lake Superior offense, but LSSU entered the first intermission ahead by a goal.
Just a minute into the second period, the Lakers extended their lead after finally managing to beat Romijn. AQ responded later in the period as Lichtensteiger netted her second goal of the game on a power play.
Julia DeHondt helped to reduce the deficit to just one with a period left to play.
Unfortunately, the only team to score in the final period would be the home team, as they reclaimed a two-goal advantage five minutes into the period. That would be the final sounds of the air horn on Friday as LSSU took the game 4-2.
Game 2: Lake Superior State 7, Aquinas 2
The second game was all LSSU for most of the time on the ice. The Lakers broke the scoring open in the first with three goals. LSSU then scored two in the second and two in the third to score seven unanswered for a 7-0 lead.
With the clock winding down,
Reyna Dominczak put Aquinas on the board with 7:53 to go.
Alyssa Exline and
Kate Kramm assisted on the goal.
The Saints grabbed one more consolation goal as
Kylie Rancilio took advantage of a power play to give AQ two. DeHondt picked up the helper and Dominczak earned her second point of the contest on the second assist.
By the Numbers
Romijn was busy both days, facing 125 shots on target. She saved 56 of the 60 shots on net on Friday for a .933 save percentage. She then saved 58 of the 65 shots on net during the second game for a .892 save percentage.
Lichtensteiger now has three goals in the last four games as the newest member of the team continues to prove to be an invaluable addition.
DeHondt's two assists were her first two assists of the season. Dominczak earned her sixth goal and fifth assist of the season.
