Caledonia, Mich. – The Saints baseball team split its doubleheader with the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils today (Mar. 25). AQ won the first game 2-0 behind the arm of
Conor Gausselin after he recorded a complete-game shutout. However, LTU managed to take the second game after going ahead in the top of the ninth inning.
These two contests keep the Saints at .500 baseball (12-12), but improve their conference record to 4-2.
Game 1: Aquinas 2, Lawrence Tech 0 (7 Innings)
The first game was quiet on both sides with the two teams combining for just 10 total hits. Aquinas broke the deadlock in the third inning after an RBI triple from
Ramsey Bousseau and a sacrifice bunt from
Nicolas Verdugo to score Bousseau. Those would be the only two runs scored in the game.
Defensively, the game followed a consistent theme of Gausselin striking out the Blue Devils. AQ's ace struck out 10 of the 26 batters he faced for an incredible performance on the mound. This was his first complete-game shutout of the season.
Game 2: Lawrence Tech 4, Aquinas 2
The strong pitching and defense from both teams continued into the second game as the contest remained scoreless until the sixth inning. LTU strung together a single and the only home run of the day to take a 2-0 lead.
However, AQ fired back in the bottom half of the frame as
Mark Binkowski and
Luke LaCross doubled and singled, respectively, to put runners on the corners. LaCross stole second before
Grant Martin hit them both home win a triple to left-center to tie the contest.
Mason Hill relieved
Zach Marshall after a strong seven innings from AQ's starting arm. Hill kept the game tied in the eighth inning, but the Blue Devils finally broke through in the ninth after an unfortunate throwing error from Aquinas.
LaCross looked to get a rally started in the bottom of the ninth, but the LTU pitcher locked in to record three outs and close out the second game.
By the Numbers
Gausselin now has 19 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched over his last two games. This is also the second time in his career that Gausselin has recorded double-digit strikeouts.
Bousseau's fantastic rookie season continued today with three more hits including a triple. He has a team-leading 29 hits and a .372 batting average this year.
Binkowski,
Ryan Gillings, and LaCross all had a multi-hit day with two hits apiece.
