Men Fourth, Women Third in April Fools Classic

Both golf teams traveled to Peru, Indiana, to take part in the Classic

Peru, Ind. — The Aquinas College golf programs both made way for Peru, Indiana, to take part in the April Fools Classic that was hosted by Bethel on Monday (Apr. 1). As the last putts were solidified the men had taken fourth out of eight, while the women took third out of five.

Men:

The men's team rounded out the Classic with a 311 (+23) showing. Host Bethel took the contest with a 299 (+11).

Both Matt Denhartigh and Dom Luciani shot 74 to be involved in a large tie at fifth.

(T21) Austin Pitch earned an 81.

(T27) Tony Lalomia and Caleb Blackburn were both right behind with an 82.

Here is how the whole Classic went:

Place Team Scores Scores
1st Bethel (A Team) 299 +11
2nd Grace College 305 +17
3rd St. Francis 307 +19
4th Aquinas 311 +23
5th Holy Cross 315 +27
6th Indiana Tech 318 +30
7th Huntington 321 +33
8th Bethel (B Team) 333 +45

"I'm really happy for Dom. I think that he would be the first to tell you that he didn't finish the fall season as well as he would have liked. He went into the off season very determined to fix a couple of things with his ball flight, and worked hard to do so," stated head coach, John Konya. "We're starting to see the fruits of his labor. We are also finally able to devote some time to the short game, on real grass, which will make a difference in our results. I'm looking forward to this weekend!"

Women:

The women's team claimed third place with a 353 (+51). Bethel took first with a 329 (+41), and Huntington took second with a 352 (+64), just one stroke ahead of the Saints.

Here is how the team performed individually:

(T6) Jada Kerns shot an 85.

(T9) Brooke Kalisz and Maddie Schense both notched 88.

(17) Emma Franklin collected a 92.

(T18) Mara Brydges finished with a 95.

And here is how the whole Classic turned out:

Place Team Scores Scores
1st Bethel 329 +41
2nd Huntington 352 +64
3rd Aquinas 353 +65
4th St. Francis 373 +85
5th Cornerstone 388 +100

I like how we're trending! One stroke away from a runner up finish is nice," remarked coach Konya. "We made a good number of birdies, but we made too many big numbers. We'll get those down to a minimum. Brooke and Jayda had pretty good days, and Maddie came back, after a tough start, to have a respectable finish.  It's a nice bounce back from the Kentucky event. Being just one stroke away from second means we're on the right track!"
