Another Shenk Hat Trick Sees #4 AQ Roll Past Defiance

Aquinas drops seven goals once again in road win over Defiance.

Defiance, Ohio – The No. 4-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team looked to keep their hot streak alive on Saturday (Sept. 28) with a road contest against Defiance. Much like all of the other conference opponents that AQ has faced, the Yellowjackets of Defiance were no match for the Saints' high-powered offense. Five first-half goals that featured another Sydney Shenk hat trick started a seven-goal day for AQ.

A 7-0 win for Aquinas improved the team to 7-0 with a 4-0 record in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC).

#4 Aquinas 7, Defiance 0

In the first-ever matchup between the Saints and the Yellowjackets, Sydney Shenk broke open the scoring early after settling a long pass and beating the defender to give Aquinas an early lead. Just a handful of minutes later, the Saints doubled their lead after Olivia Bowling scored with a Madison Slezinski helper.

Just 15 seconds later, Slezinski assisted another goal, this time to Shenk to give AQ a 3-0 lead in just six and a half minutes. There was a brief pause in the scoring for almost 20 minutes, but another Bowling goal, this time from Shenk, shifted the scoreboard to four. Less than two minutes following Bowling's second goal, Shenk scored once more for a 26-minute hat trick.

The early outpouring of goals from the Saints finally slowed down following the hat trick as the score remained 5-0 heading into halftime. Coming out of the half, AQ's rotation of players expanded. Freshman Abigail Kramer capitalized on the opportunity and sent in a shot from outside the box to find the back of the net for her first career goal.

Aquinas would score once more in the 78th minute. In her first appearance for the team, Kennedy Thelen found a pass through from Kramer and struck the ball with her left foot to beat the keeper for her first career goal.

The contest went back and forth following that seventh goal, but neither team managed a goal, ending the fixture 7-0 in favor of the Saints.

By the Numbers
  • The Saints fell just short of AQ's all-time record for the most shots in a game, outshooting the Yellowjackets 61-1.
  • Aquinas put 26 of those 61 shots on target, resulting in seven goals. Aquinas now has scored at least seven goals in all four conference games.
  • Shenk's hat trick is now her third consecutive game with a hat trick. She now has 14 points this week.
  • Seven different Saints either scored or assisted a goal in the rout over Defiance.
