Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Women's Basketball Team returned home for the first game in 2025 with an impressive 66-60 conference win over Madonna University.
Claire Gregwer led the way on both the offensive and defensive sides of the court. Not only was Gregwer the leading scorer with 21 points, she added 15 boards and three assists to go along with a block and a steal.
The Crusaders led after one 17-10, but Coach Morris's squad started to chip away in the second quarter. Aquinas captured their first lead of the game with 1:39 remaining in the half when
Rhema Dozier hit a deep triple, her only basket, for a 31-30 lead.
Coach Morris said the Crusader's zone D was an early challenge, but patience was the key to getting back into the game. "We couldn't get to our spots; they were the first team to zone us; it took us time to get into the flow and get to our spots."
Four Aquinas players scored double digits; besides Gregwer, Junior
Isabel Reemsnyder scored 12, with Senior
Ashlyn Wilkes and Junior
Paige Guernsey each adding eleven points. Junior
Emily Cline had a game-high five assists and five rebounds.
In the third quarter, Aquinas was able to stretch the lead to eleven before the Crusaders began to fight back. According to Coach Morris, too many silly fouls helped the Madonna effort. "We had some small breakdowns, they hit some threes, and we bailed them out with fouls late in the shot clock."
With two minutes to go, Madonna was able to pull within three before the Saints slammed the door. Guernsey hit four straight free throws down the stretch, and a big lay-up by Gregwer sealed the deal.
