Saints’ Season Ends in Battle Against Top-Ranked Indiana Tech

Aquinas Fights Hard, Falls to Indiana Tech in WHAC Quarterfinals

Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Aquinas Saints men's basketball team saw their season come to an end Thursday night, battling valiantly but ultimately falling to top-seeded Indiana Tech in the WHAC quarterfinals. Despite the magic of Tuesday's opening-round win, the Saints couldn't overcome the firepower of the Warriors, who pulled away for a 96-68 victory at the Schaefer Center.

Indiana Tech 96, Aquinas 68

The Saints started strong, keeping pace with the Warriors early. Aquinas even held a brief lead in the opening minutes, showing the grit and determination that defined their season. However, Indiana Tech's efficiency proved to be the difference, as the Warriors shot 53.5% from the field and capitalized on their opportunities in the paint.

Despite the lopsided final score, Aquinas never backed down. Off the bench, Jacob Howard led the Saints in scoring with 14 points, including four three-pointers. Devon Boyd added 12 points, six assists, and two steals, while Caden Pokorzynski just missed a double-double, contributing 9 points and 9 rebounds. Jack Futa also chipped in with five points, six rebounds, and three steals.

Aquinas showed resilience throughout the game, outscoring Indiana Tech's bench 35-49 and forcing seven steals on defense. The Saints also battled hard on the boards, pulling down 41 rebounds against a tough Indiana Tech front court.

Coach's Reflections

While the loss ends the Saints' season, the effort and dedication displayed by this team were undeniable. Head Coach Ryan Bertoia reflected on the journey, emphasizing the character and perseverance of his squad.

"Our team battled more adversity than any team I've coached the past 19 years or played on. I can't even begin to describe it. This group had every opportunity to throw the towel or become negative and then didn't. They battled and fought and made coaching fun for me again. They taught me a lot about resiliency. I can't thank them enough for how they represented the program and improved the culture. This group will, no doubt, go on to be successful in life."
