Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas College Valorant Team took to the online arena against Lourdes for week five of the spring season on Thursday (Feb. 27).
Aquinas 2, Lourdes 1
AQ succumbed to a slow start in the first map as the Gray Wolves pushed a 9-3 advantage. Aquinas mounted a comeback but had its momentum cut off, halting the remarkable offensive. In the end, LU secured the first game 9-13. But it was clear the Saints were still warming up throughout game one.
Game two saw AQ turn up its control as the team focused on communication and overall map control.
Megan Brennan helped secure the game two victory as she came up big with a four-elimination sequence one round before game point. Allowing the Saints to push the contest to its third and final leg. AQ was feeling alive as it had just secured its first game in program history by a score of 13-8. As Aquinas just secured its first point, the team set their eyes on the overall win.
Game three began with a split as the teams drew 6-6. The back-and-forth continued as AQ dropped a vital round with a weapon advantage. Even so, Aquinas managed to bounce back with key three-elimination rounds from both Brennen and
Max Aguilar-Ochoa. Notable causes for success also came from
Noah Szarejko and Brennen's retakes. The Saints finished the game with a score of 13-8, taking the contest 2-1, earning their first Valorant title win in program history.
This is what Interim Director
Tommy Gehl had to share about the team's performance, "It is truly amazing to see the team progress every single week. The team has battled through levels of diversity for the entire season, and will continue to face difficult competition for the remainder of it. Seeing all the smiles after securing the first win was a great sight to see. The success of this team is all owed to the student-athletes and our amazing Volunteer Coach and alumni Morgan Ferguson. Without everyone's drive for greatness, we would not be in this position."
