Saints Show Grit, But Second-Half Drought Leads to 7-5 Loss

Aquinas Battles, But Rochester Christian Holds On in Defensive Duel

Grand Rapids, Mich. — For a squad that wasn't sure they would be able to play in the 2025 season, the AQ Women's Lacrosse team is developing a reputation for giving 100% regardless of the lack of a deep roster. Tuesday evening, the Saints hosted Rochester Christian in a defensive gem that had no goals scored in the second half. Unfortunately for the Saints, the final score was the halftime score, with Rochester Christian securing a 7-5 victory over Aquinas.

Game Summary:

Aquinas came out strong, striking first with a goal from Vanessa Bailey just over a minute into the contest. Quinzy Lantz followed shortly after with an assist from Sophia Schmader to give the Saints a 2-0 lead. However, Rochester Christian responded with four unanswered goals to close out the first quarter. The second quarter saw Aquinas battle back, with Schmader and Kylie Rancilio adding key goals to keep the Saints within striking distance.

Despite their efforts, Aquinas couldn't break through in the second half, as both defenses tightened up, and neither team found the back of the net. The Saints outshot Rochester Christian 8-1 in the final quarter, but Rochester's goalkeeper Kendall Cabot stood tall, finishing the night with eight saves. Aquinas showed resilience, dominating the ground ball battle and forcing turnovers, but couldn't find the equalizer in the closing moments.

By the Numbers:

  • 8-1 – AQ outshot Rochester Christian in the fourth quarter but couldn't capitalize.
  • 16-14 – The Saints won the ground ball battle, showcasing their hustle.
  • 5-2 – Rochester Christian's edge in free-position attempts proved to be the difference.
  • 8 – Saves by Rochester Christian's Kendall Cabot, frustrating the AQ offense.

Coach's Comment:

Interim Coach Kyle Goodbee spoke after the game about how far his squad has come, "I couldn't be prouder of this team. They left everything on that field tonight—heart, grit, and determination. We played our game, we fought until the final whistle, and sometimes the scoreboard just doesn't reflect the effort these athletes put in. This game means everything to them, and you can see that in the way they compete. It stings to come up short, but I have no doubt that this group will use this as fuel to keep pushing forward. We'll be back, and we'll be stronger because of it."

Up Next:

The Saints will return to action on Saturday as they host the Pilots of Bethel. The game is set for a noon start. The game will also be on the AQ Network, with Joey Sutherlin providing the play-by-play.
