GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — While Black History Month officially concludes on Feb. 28, its spirit lives on through the remarkable individuals who continue to shape history every day. Among them is Dr. Ronald D. Reeves, the director of intercollegiate athletics at Aquinas College—a leader whose journey, resilience and commitment to excellence exemplify the essence of Black History Month.

A Career of Excellence and Service

Dr. Reeves made history in May 2024, becoming the first Black athletic director in Aquinas College history. His appointment is more than just a milestone—it is a testament to perseverance, excellence and a deep-rooted passion for making a difference in collegiate athletics. Since arriving at Aquinas, Dr. Reeves has already made an indelible impact, restructuring the administration team and implementing a strategic vision to elevate Saints athletics to new heights.

Dr. Reeves' journey to this role is a story of dedication, intelligence and an unwavering commitment to student-athletes. A Detroit native and graduate of the University of Detroit Mercy, he excelled as a track and field student-athlete before pursuing higher education at Ithaca College, where he earned a master's in sports management, and Southern Illinois University, where he completed a doctorate in higher education administration.

Before joining Aquinas, Dr. Reeves built an impressive career in athletic administration, holding leadership positions at the University of Colorado, Florida A&M, Southern Illinois, Wisconsin-Milwaukee, North Carolina and Alabama A&M. Beyond higher education, he also served in key roles with the Internal Revenue Service, the Pentagon, the U.S. Air Force and the city of Denver—a testament to his diverse expertise and ability to lead in complex environments.

A Leader Beyond the Court

Dr. Reeves' influence extends far beyond athletics. He is a passionate advocate for Special Olympics, a dedicated member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and a mentor to countless student-athletes and staff. His leadership philosophy is rooted in integrity, education and service—qualities that make him not just an outstanding administrator but also a role model for future generations.

For those who are either unaware or blinded by the color of a person's skin, it takes an individual like Dr. Ronald Reeves to remind us all that hard work, education, an unwavering work ethic and a kind soul will always result in a leader our society can be proud of.
