Grand Rapids, MI — What a way to kick off the season! The Aquinas men's rugby team, led by Head Coach Lance Hohaia, battled through adversity, showcased heart, and delivered a gritty 27–13 win over Michigan in front of their home crowd. With a mix of veteran leadership and exciting new faces, the Saints showed that this group is ready to make noise in 2025. Even a man-down disadvantage couldn't slow the determination, as AQ powered their way to a statement victory to open the year.

Aquinas 27, Michigan 13

The opening stages saw Michigan take an early advantage, but the Saints found their footing midway through the first half. Marcel Denysschen crossed the try line to get AQ on the board, with Liam Inman converting to narrow the gap. The Saints then struck again before halftime when Trayvon Mathis finished off a clinical set piece on the edge, giving Aquinas momentum and the lead heading into the break.

The second half belonged to Aquinas. Inman extended the advantage with a penalty kick before Michigan struck back with an intercept try to pull within one score. From there, the Saints reestablished control with relentless forward play and sharp tactical kicking. Dom Hines powered over from a lineout drive, capitalizing on sustained pressure deep in Michigan territory.

With time winding down, Inman delivered once more, slicing through the Wolverine defense from an attacking scrum and touching down for a decisive try. He calmly slotted the conversion himself, sealing the Saints' opening-day victory. Behind a resilient pack and opportunistic backs, Aquinas showed their ability to grind through adversity and finish strong.

Several Saints made key contributions throughout the match. Denysschen's first-half try shifted momentum, Mathis provided a spark with his speed and finishing ability, and Hines' physicality set the tone up front. Inman's all-around performance stood out with 17 points from the boot and ball in hand. Defensively, the Saints stayed organized even when fatigue set in, with younger players stepping into big roles.

Inside the Numbers

Coaches' Comments

After the game, head coach Lance Hohaia reflected on the performance:

"We'll take the victory in our first match of the year, but there are definitely areas we'll need to tidy up before the next one. The team showed plenty of grit and desire, especially playing a man down for majority of the game. Fatigue crept in, and it showed through some of the penalties we conceded. Congrats to our freshmen; Xavier, Darryl, JaVani, Lars and Shaundre who all made their debut for the school and performed well."

Game Note

The AQ men's rugby team, the Athletic Department, and the entire Aquinas community send their support to Thomas Allsopp, who sustained a serious ankle injury during the match. Coach Hohaia added:

"Tommy, we're all behind you and wishing you a strong recovery. Much love from your Saints family."
