Grand Rapids, Mich. -- Before the Aquinas College men's soccer team could think about playing for a WHAC championship Saturday, the Saints had to protect that opportunity Wednesday against archrival Cornerstone. Down 2-0 midway through the second half, that chance was slipping away — until two goals in 2:18 and a clutch late penalty save changed everything. A tie rarely feels this big, but this 2-2 result sent the Maroon and White into the final day of the regular season with a championship still within reach.
Aquinas 2, Cornerstone 2
Fikret Hasovic challenged Cornerstone goalkeeper Luke Philo twice in the opening seven minutes, forcing a pair of saves as Aquinas looked to establish an early advantage. Adam Flanders kept the pressure coming with four first-half attempts, including a shot Philo stopped at 24:08. Emmanuel Bedolla added two shots before halftime, while Jackson Rittner and Jareth Balcaraz-Alvarado provided minutes off the bench.
Despite that pressure, Cornerstone broke through at 33:50 to put Aquinas behind. Dario Cela made three first-half saves, helping keep the deficit at one heading into the break.
The task became considerably tougher when the Golden Eagles scored again at 49:38, leaving the Saints down 2-0. As the second half moved past its midpoint without an AQ answer, the championship opportunity the Saints had worked toward all season appeared to be slipping away. Chase Jacobs Gries, Joseph Farhat and Trae Collins each registered attempts, but Aquinas still needed the breakthrough that could turn urgency into belief.
Carter Hagan entered at 66:12 and put his first shot on target at 69:43, forcing another Philo save. Then, at 71:14, Hasovic stepped to the penalty spot with a chance to change the afternoon. He converted, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and breathing life back into the Maroon and White.
One play had brought the Saints back into the game, and the next breakthrough came just 2:18 later. Maurice Chandler Jr. supplied the assist, Hagan delivered the finish at 73:32, and suddenly the two-goal deficit was gone. Flanders and Hasovic continued pursuing the go-ahead goal before Marcos Real tested Philo again at 82:30.
The Saints finished with a 19-10 advantage in shots and a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, with Owen Dibling, Miguel Gonzalez and Evan Goodfellow also contributing minutes to the team effort. Yet after all that work to pull even, Aquinas faced another potentially devastating turn when Cornerstone received a penalty kick at 84:37.
Lake Vander Ploeg stepped to the spot with an opportunity to put the Golden Eagles back in front. Cela met the moment, saving the penalty with just 5:23 remaining to protect the comeback and the Saints' championship hopes. His fourth and final save ensured Aquinas would reach the final whistle with the point it desperately needed.
Following Wednesday's draw, Aquinas stands at 9-6-1 overall and 6-1-1 in WHAC play, while Cornerstone moves to 4-10-1 overall and 4-3-1 in the conference. The Saints hold second place with 19 points, one behind Madonna, which stands at 8-3-4 overall and 6-0-2 in league play. Saturday's regular-season finale in Livonia now gives AQ the opportunity it fought to preserve: defeat the Crusaders and claim the WHAC regular-season championship and an automatic berth to the NAIA national tournament.

Coaches' Comments
For head coach Luke Ruff, Wednesday's response reflected the belief and resolve needed to turn the Saints' season-long focus on WHAC play into a championship opportunity. With a conference title and a national tournament berth within reach Saturday, Ruff credited his team for refusing to let that chance slip away.
"Our priority from the beginning has been WHAC play and putting ourselves in position to compete for a championship and reach the national tournament," Ruff said. "Down 2-0, we were running out of time, but our guys never stopped working for the next opportunity. Fikret gave us the breakthrough, Maurice and Carter connected to get us level, and Dario made an enormous save to keep us there. That response says a lot about this group. We have given ourselves a chance to play for a championship Saturday, and now we have to make that opportunity count."
