Saints Battle Through Short-Handed Roster in 7–5 Loss at Madonna University

A late fourth-quarter push and strong defensive effort weren’t enough as the Saints came up just short in conference play

Livonia Mich, – The Aquinas College women's lacrosse team traveled to Livonia, Michigan, to face Madonna in their third conference matchup of the season. Despite continuing to deal with a limited roster, the Saints competed hard throughout the contest. Aquinas created opportunities but struggled to convert consistently, ultimately falling to the Crusaders, 7-5.

Aquinas 5, Madonna 7

Emersyn Gaitan got the start in net as the game began. Madonna controlled the opening draw, but Aquinas quickly forced a turnover, with Lucy Dusseau-Thompson scooping up the ground ball to secure possession. The Saints capitalized early, as Maizie Holmes found the back of the net off an assist from Sophia Davis to take a 1-0 lead. Aquinas fired off six more shots in the opening quarter but couldn't add to the total, while holding the Crusaders scoreless.

Vanessa Bailey opened the second quarter with a ground ball, leading to a successful clear and a shot from Ayiana Pansang-Rangel that was saved by Madonna's goalkeeper. The Crusaders broke through at the nine-minute mark to tie the game 1-1. Holmes controlled the draw again, and Addison Munn put a shot on goal, but it was turned away. Madonna added another goal with about three minutes remaining to take a 2-1 lead. Late chances from Davis, Pansang-Rangel, Holmes, and Dusseau-Thompson came up empty, sending Aquinas into halftime trailing 2-1.

Madonna gained momentum early in the third quarter, scoring just 30 seconds in to extend the lead to 3-1. The Crusaders followed with another goal to go up 4-1. Mya Chickering made a defensive stop, forcing a turnover and collecting the ground ball, but the Saints couldn't convert on the possession. With five minutes left in the quarter, Davis scored an unassisted goal to cut the deficit to 4-2. Madonna answered with its fifth goal before the end of the quarter, taking a 5-2 advantage into the final frame.

The Crusaders struck quickly again in the fourth quarter, capitalizing on a fast break to make it 6-2. Munn picked up a ground ball to give Aquinas possession, but defensive pressure from Madonna forced a turnover. After a yellow and green card put the Crusaders in a strong position, the Saints responded defensively, forcing a turnover that Holmes recovered to regain possession. Aquinas made a late push in the final minutes. With under two minutes remaining, Munn scored off an assist from Davis to cut the lead. Madonna responded with another goal to extend the margin, but Munn and Davis connected once more to make it 7-4. Bailey secured the final draw control and scored with just one second remaining, but the late effort wasn't enough as Aquinas fell 7-5.
