Aquinas Sits in Fourth After Day One of WHAC Championships

The Saints had three national qualifying finishers and eight athletes finish in the top eight of their event

The Aquinas men's track and field team competed in day one of the WHAC Indoor Championships on Friday night (Feb. 18) as the meet is taking place at the home facility of the Alksnis Athletic and Recreation Building. The Saints currently sit fourth out of eight teams after seven events have been completed.

Indiana Tech currently sits atop of the standings with 70 points as Cornerstone is in second with 55 points and Siena Heights in third with 53.5 points. AQ is in fourth at 35.5 points with Madonna (35 points), Rochester (12 points), Concordia (four points), and Cleary (two points) rounding out the rest of the standings.

The Saints had one 'A' standard finish and two more provisional qualifying marks in today's competition.

The 4x800 team of Will Westveer, Will Finch, Zander Masten, and Caleb Hodgkinson got the day started off with a bang after hitting the 'A' standard to qualify for nationals. The relay team finished with a time of 7:56.40, which was good for third behind Siena Heights and Cornerstone.

In the long jump, AQ had a new provisional qualifier as Jesunifemi Ojutalayo jumped 7.06m. This finish took second in the event just .04m behind the winner.

Continuing with the field events, Collin Pollatz also finished second in the weight throw with a mark of 16.97m. Pollatz has already provisionally qualified for the national meet when he threw 17.07m a couple weeks ago. Pollatz also scored in the shot put after taking sixth with a throw of 14.10m.

Aquinas had two jumpers score in the high jump as Jacob Dawson finished fourth and Blake Whetstone placed eighth. Dawson cleared a height of 1.86m as Wetstone jumped 1.76m.

The pole vault had some stiff competition, but AQ had Mason King finish in a tie for fifth after he jumped 4.05m.

Edward Frey was able to score points for the Saints in the 5000m run as he finished with a time of 16:11.77 and finished eighth.

The women's weight throw was postponed until day two of the WHAC Championships due to an injury and will begin tomorrow at 11:00 AM. The rest of the events will kick off at 1:00 PM as scheduled.
