Women's Track and Field Finishes Third in WHAC Indoor Championships

The Saints had one individual WHAC Champion in Maggie Whitney

The Aquinas women's track and field team competed in its second and final day of the WHAC Indoor Championships this Saturday afternoon (Feb. 19) in the Alksnis Athletic and Recreation Building. The women finished third overall as a team and finished with one more individual WHAC Champion.
 
Winning the conference was the Warriors from Indiana Tech. The #1 team in the nation finished with a score of 280.5 points compared to the Saint's 111. Placing second were the local Golden Eagles from Cornerstone. They finished with 144.5 points. Madonna finished fourth with 59 points and Siena Heights right behind them with 58 points to round out the top five.
 
The one WHAC Champion on the day was Grace Sweet in the 800 meter. She was able to edge out a competitor from Lawrence Tech to win the event with a time of 2:22.11.
 
The highest scorer for the Saints was Maggie Whitney with 19.5 points. She competed in the 4x800 relay, 600m, 1000m, and 4x400 relay. She helped the relay teams finish second in the 4x800 and third in the 4x400. The 4x400 team included Tarshana Kimbrough, Casey Lenon, and Aubrey Doucette, who finished third with a time of 4:10.17. Then in the 1000m and 600m, Whitney finished second overall in both with times of 3:04.59 and 1:36.53, respectfully. With her performance in the 600m, she is now fourth all-time in Aquinas history and earned an automatic qualifier.

After qualifying for the 60m hurdles finals, Kimbrough and Theresa Judd both placed in the top eight. Kimbrough, who has already provisionally qualified for the national meet, finished sixth with a 9.15. Judd came in seventh at 9.49. Kimbrough also finished fourth in the 400m at a time of 59.85.

In the mile, Hannah Adler was runner-up with a time of 5:09.74. She has already hit the 'A' standard in the mile previously with a 5:05.34 time. Adler then came back in the 3K with a time of 10:29 to finish up as runner-up again. She has also automatically qualified in that race at a time of 10:03.34. Megan Gough (10:48.92) and Hanna Grant (10:55.04) also finished in scoring positions in the event, going sixth and eighth.

The duo of Gough and Grant also finished in the top eight of the 5000m has Grant (18:34.14) finished fourth and Gough (18:49.78) came in fifth.

Lenon also finished in scoring position in the 200m after taking home eighth place at a time of 26.26. 

Starting the day for Aquinas, was Shekira Edgar. Edgar was able to sneak into scoring position with an eight place finish in the weight throw at a mark of 13.11m.
 
Sticking with the field events, Shanna Han and Crystal Goyette finished fifth and sixth in the triple jump with jumps of 10.22m and 10.11m.
 
At the conclusion of the meet, Grace Sweet was named to the Champions of Character Team. Leading the women throughout the day was head coach Mike Wojciakowski, who was named the women's WHAC Champions of Character Coach.
 
The a number of Saints on the WHAC All-Academic Team including: Rebecca Beltran, Aubrey Doucette, Meghan Douglass, Shekira Edgar, Victoria Faber, Megan Gough, Hanna Grant, Hannah Hamilton, Tarshana Kimbrough, Casey Lenon, Amanda Maurer, Hope McGarry-Costello, Emily McManus, Kennedy Pollington, and Grace Sweet. To make the all-academic team, the athlete must be at least a junior in the classroom, maintain a 3.25 cumulative GPA, and be at their school for at least a year.

Aquinas will be back in action on March 3-5 when a select group of national qualifiers travel down to Brookings, South Dakota for the NAIA Indoor Championships. The time for the three days of competition is to be announced.
