Men's Track and Field Sits First After Day 1 of WHAC Championships

The men's track and field team began their first day of the WHAC Outdoor Conference Championship today in Ann Arbor. At the end of day one, the men walk away with two WHAC champions and a new automatic qualifier.

After Day 1, the men sit atop the standings with 70 points. Siena Heights (61.50), Indiana Tech (46.50), Cornerstone (35.50), and Madonna (27) round out the top five.

The first highlight of today comes from the Hammer Throw with Collin Pollatz placing first. His throw of 55.99 meters was six meters farther than second place to seal the dominant victory.

The second Saints victory of the day came in the form of a relay. The 4x800 team of Will Finch, Caleb Hodgkinson, Zander Masten, and Will Westveer finished with a time of 7:44.80. This time bested rival Cornerstone by less than a second and also earned the quartet a qualifying standard.

Elmar Koster had a big performance in the Javelin with a throw of 57.90 meters. This throw not only placed him second in the event to earn eight points, but it also automatically qualifies him for nationals later this month.

Jesunifemi Ojutalayo and Isaiah Jackson were both in the long jump and finished with jumps of 6.72 and 6.46 meters. These distances placed them third and fifth. Jackson would also qualify for tomorrow's final in the 110 Hurdles.

The duo of Jesse Henderson and Mason King represented the Saints well in the pole vault. They finished with heights of 4.60 meters and 4.30 meters to place second and third.

The scoring duos kept coming as Jacob Dawson and Blake Whetstone were both able to score for AQ in the high jump. Dawson finished fourth with a height of 1.80m and Whetstone finished ninth with a jump of 1.75 meters.

In the longest event of the conference championships, Matt Schieber, Andrew Ireland, and Edward Frey all represented Aquinas. Schieber was the first Saint across the line with a time of 32:35 placing third. Ireland came across at 33:15 for fifth followed by Frey with a time of 33:19.

Finally, Lawrence Young qualified for finals in the 100m Dash. His time of 10.93 squeaked him into the last spot of finals.

Day two will begin tomorrow at 12:00 on the field with men's discus and track events will begin at 1:30 with the Steeplechase.
