Hardy Breaks His Own Record in 3000 Meters

Hodgkinson and Frey Hit Qualifying Times

Allendale, Michigan - The men's track & field team had a very solid showing today at the Bill Clinger Classic. The event was contested on the campus of Grand Valley State University at the Kelly Family Sports Center. The Saints broke one school record, tallied three national qualifiers and added a new name to Aquinas' All Time List.

Ben Hardy broke his own record that he set a year ago at the very same meet. His performance today placed him 6th in the Invitational 3k and lowered his record to 8:23.43 from 8:26.99. His time leads the conference and he is currently 8th on the NAIA performance list. Also in the 3000 meters, Edward Frey used a strong last lap to propel him to a heat victory and a NAIA provisional qualifying mark. His time of 8:31.00 puts him at #3 on the Saints All-Time List. Aquinas now holds eight of the top 12 spots in men's 3k on the WHAC's performance list.

Also hitting an automatic qualifier to nationals was Caleb Hodgkinson. Caleb's time of 1:54.00 in the 800 meter pairs with his "A" standard he hit last week in the 1K.

The field events were highlighted by the huge personal best by Thomas Bearden in the shot put. Thomas, a GR West Catholic grad, now ranks second in the WHAC with a mark of 46-0.

The Saints will return to action on February 2nd when the host the annual Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame Classic at the Alksnis Athletic and Recreation Building. Action will begin at 5pm.
