Kennesaw, Georgia - The track & field teams kick started their outdoor season with a trip South for some warmer weather. Coach Winne and Coach Ward led a group of sprinters, hurdles, and jumpers to Kennesaw State University for the opportunity for high marks at this early season test.
Coupled with a beautiful day and quality competition, the Saints took full advantage and left the meet with personal bests, national qualifiers, and a pair of school records. Both
Nathan Iacona and
Jake Van Tassell were limited during the indoor season due to injury, but you never would have known it today as both etched their names atop of the record board. Iacona, who was an Indoor All American in 2023, returned to form with a 48.34 to eclipse the previous standard set by Caleb Teachout (48.40) eleven years ago. Iacona's mark was also a provisional qualifier in the 400 meters. Van Tassell's time of 53.46 in the 400 hurdles cut nearly a second from his previous personal best. His time erased a 48 year school record that Doug Filmore (53.94) held for nearly half a century. The mark automatically qualifiers him for the National Championships and currently has the sophomore from Greenville, Michigan seeded 4th in the nation.
The Saints will return to action next weekend at GVSU.
