Augusta, Mich. – The Aquinas women's golf team took to the greens on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 23-24) to compete in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) Fall Preview. The lady Saints played two rounds of 18 on Monday and another round on Tuesday to conclude the three-round preview. AQ found itself in eighth place following the first day of competition, but the Saints rallied on Tuesday with one of the best scores of the day to move up to sixth.
AQ progressively improved each round of the preview. The Saints shot a 360 (+72) in the first round, a 342 (+54) in the second round, and a 332 (+44) in the final round. The third-round score was the second-best score of the day, trailing only the WHAC Preview winners of Lawrence Tech.
Lawrence Tech was named the winner of the preview with an impressive team score of 925 (+71). Cleary (980, +116), Indiana Tech (1,011, +147), Siena Heights (1,025, +161), and Lourdes (1,030, +166) rounded out the top five teams.
Jayda Kerns was the top-placed Saints on the leaderboard after three rounds with a score of 258 (+42). She shot a +20 in round one, a +14 in round two, and capped off the tournament with a final round score of +8.
Similarly to Kerns,
Ava Clark continued to get better through the rounds. She scored +19, +15, and +9 throughout the Preview to finish with a score of 259 (+43) in 27th place.
Zoey Quinn was the third and final Saint to play in all three rounds, recording a 36th-place finish with a score of 266 (+50). She shot 20 over in the first round and then 15 over in the ensuing two rounds.
Emma Franklin and
Maddie Schense both played in two of the three rounds. Franklin shot a +11 in round two and a +12 in round three. Schense played in the first two rounds, scoring 13 over and 14 over, respectively.
"I am really proud of how this team is coming together," stated head coach John Konya. "They are growing and developing each event. We have a ways to go, but they are showing snippets of really good team golf. We are making fewer mistakes and thinking our way around the golf course more and more each day.
I am really happy for Ava, who hasn't been feeling great recently but showed some of that talent that we have seen before. Emma had a really nice nine holes today to bounce back from yesterday and Jayda shot 36 on one of her nines, which was really impressive. Zoey, who I moved into the number one spot for this event due to how consistent she has been playing, didn't score as well as she has been, but she continues to really hit the ball well – her scores just didn't reflect that, which happens sometimes.
I am also really proud of how they achieved this score while only having four players today. So, they all stepped up and picked up their teammate, who unfortunately was not available today."
