Saints Fight Hard but Fall Short Against No. 23 Indiana Tech, 65-52

Contest marks the Saints fourth time facing a nationally voted team

Fort Wayne, Ind. — The Aquinas College women's basketball team traveled to Indiana to take on the No. 23-ranked Warriors in a key conference matchup. Despite a strong effort, the Saints were unable to secure a victory, leaving them with a 5-2 record in the conference and 8-7 overall.

 

Aquinas 52, Indiana Tech 65

Indiana Tech was the first to score in the game, but Aquinas quickly responded as Emily Cline converted a layup into a three-point play with a made free throw, giving the Saints a 3-2 lead. The Warriors then strung together six straight points, but a timely three-pointer from Rhema Dozier halted the run, narrowing the deficit to 8-6. Indiana Tech answered with another surge, extending their lead, but a three-pointer from Leah French kept the Saints within striking distance at 16-9. The Warriors closed out the first quarter with a commanding 21-9 advantage.

The second quarter began with Indiana Tech scoring again, but Ashlyn Wilkes sank a three to reduce the gap to 22-12. Brynn Reams followed with back-to-back jumpers and a free throw to bring Aquinas to 28-17. Claire Gregwer added two free throws to end the half with the score at 32-21 in favor of the Warriors.

Indiana Tech opened the second half with a six-point run, but the Saints responded with a jumper and two free throws from Gregwer, followed by a three-pointer from Dozier to cut the lead to 40-30. Wilkes hit another three, bringing Aquinas within seven at 44-37. Isabel Reemsnyder closed out the third quarter with a jumper, keeping the score tight at 46-39.

In the fourth quarter, Gregwer hit another jumper, and Dozier added a layup, narrowing the deficit to 51-43. Reemsnyder then scored four quick points, but a series of late baskets from the Warriors extended their lead to 59-49. Despite a three-pointer from Reams, Aquinas couldn't overcome the late run, and the Warriors held on for a 65-52 victory.
 

By the Numbers 

  • Gregwer claimed another double-double earning 14 and 12 rebounds 

  • Reams coined 10 points and went 3-4 from the free-throw line 

  • Wilkes added four assists and Gregwer and Dozier both found two
