Caledonia, Michigan -Â The men's track and field team returned to action this past weekend at the DU Panther Classic. The two day meet was hosted by Davenport University at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Under ideal conditions, the Saints were able to establish many personal bests and record a number of top five finishes.
In his first action of the outdoor season,
Jake Van Tassell would cruise to victory in the 400 meters with a time of 49.02. He would later team up with
Marcus Mitchell,
Nathan Iacona, and
Jaben Bakker to run 3:18.01 to win the 4x400 meter relay. Also starring for the Saints in the 400 meters was
Juan Garcia Valdes who crossed the line in second place (51.66). Aquinas received a strong showing in the 200 meters as Iacona (21.88), Mitchell (22.75), and
Keiton Fase (22.85) went 2-4-5.Â
Peyhton Wade debuted with a second place finish in the 100 meters (11.15), while
Jaben Bakker (1:55.3) and
Nolan Moffit (1:59.62) would place third and fifth respectively in the 800 meters.
The field events were anchored by
Casey Mathieu, who recorded a personal best (139-10) and a third place finish in the javelin.
Blake Whetstone cleared 6-3.5 in the high jump to place 5th and
Peyton Scott secured a matching fifth place finish in the long jump (19-10.25).
Jacob Merryfield placed second in triple jump with a mark of 42-5.25.
The Saints will look for continued success next weekend at GVSU's Al Owens Classic.
