Grand Rapids, MI. — With both teams battling to remain near the top of the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC) standings, the Aquinas Saints and the University of Northwestern Ohio Racers took the field ready for a hard-fought matchup. From physical defensive stops to key scoring opportunities, both sides fought for control in a contest that kept the pressure high from the opening whistle to the final minutes.
Aquinas 2, UNOH 0
From the opening whistle, both teams came out aggressively, looking to establish control and gain an early advantage. UNOH pushed into Aquinas territory, but Owen Dibling stepped in with a big slide tackle to turn possession back over to the Saints. The Racers quickly regained the ball following an Aquinas foul and put a shot on target, only to be denied by goalkeeper Dario Cela, who made an early statement with a key save.
The Racers continued to apply pressure, earning back-to-back corner kicks, but the Aquinas defense stood its ground. Another corner in the 34th minute created a dangerous opportunity for UNOH, as a header sailed just wide of the right post.
As the first half progressed, the Saints began searching for their own breakthrough. Fikret Hasovic drew a foul that resulted in a yellow card for the Racers, setting up a free kick for Aquinas. Chase Jacobs Gries rose for a header, but the attempt drifted wide, leaving the Saints still searching for the opening goal.
Neither side was willing to back down. UNOH fired another hard shot toward goal, but Adam Flanders put himself in the way to make a crucial block. Aquinas answered with a cross deep into Racer territory, forcing the UNOH goalkeeper off his line to shut down the chance.
The closing minutes of the half brought even more pressure. Flanders put a shot on target that was deflected, and Emmanuel Bedolla followed with a second attempt on the rebound, but the Racers' goalkeeper came up with another save. With just 15 seconds remaining before halftime, UNOH threatened once more, but Joseph Farhat cleared the danger to keep the match scoreless heading into the break.
Aquinas returned to the field with renewed energy in the second half, determined to turn its defensive effort into a scoring opportunity. Maurice Chandler Jr. battled for possession and helped push the Saints forward, while the Aquinas defense continued to withstand the Racers' attempts to break through.
The Saints' persistence began to pay off as they created another dangerous opportunity in the 23rd minute of the half. Farhat sent a shot toward goal that was blocked, but Trae Collins was ready for the rebound. His follow-up forced another save from the UNOH goalkeeper, keeping the pressure on the Racers.
The breakthrough came just four minutes later. Hasovic found the back of the net off an assist from Marcos Real, finally putting the Saints on the board and giving Aquinas the advantage it had been working toward throughout the match.
With the lead in hand, the Saints continued to battle as the physicality intensified. UNOH searched for an equalizer, but Cela remained steady between the posts, making another important save to protect the Aquinas advantage.
As the clock ticked down, the Saints delivered one more decisive moment. With 10 minutes remaining, Collins connected on a pass from Evan Goodfellow and found the back of the net, giving Aquinas a second goal and valuable breathing room in the closing stages.
From the early defensive stops to the late second-half finish, the Saints stayed composed when it mattered most. Aquinas held firm through the final whistle, earning an important conference victory, extending its winning streak to two games, and strengthening its position in the WHAC standings.
