Saints Claim Five Event Wins at WHAC vs MIAA Challenge

Grand Rapids, Michigan - The women's track & field team continued their indoor season by hosting the annual WHAC vs MIAA Challenge at the Alksnis Athletic & Recreation Building. The Saints hosted Cornerstone, Cleary, Siena Heights, Alma and Calvin in front of a packed house on Friday night. The Saints claimed five first place finishes, hit two provisional qualifiers and had one new addition to Aquinas' All-Time List.

Maelie Hope was a triple winner as she claimed the top spot in the 60 meter dash, the weight throw and the shot put.  Hope improved her provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw with a distance of 55-6 1/4. Her 7.85 effort in the 60 and a toss of 43-5 in shot put were both good enough to keep at the top of the medal stand. Shaily Baynes also hit a national provisional qualifier in the pole vault. Baynes clearance of 11-11 3/4 won the event and placed her 5th on the Saints All-Time List.  Lauren Wooer also picked up an event win in the 1,000 meter as she raced unchallenged to a time of 3:03.04.

The Saints also received a school record performance by Lindsey Strutz in the women's pentathlon. Strutz competed at the SVSU Jet's Pizza Invitational and placed 2nd out of 13 competitors. Her efforts have her currently in 17th place on the NAIA Performance List.

Aquinas will return to action next Saturday at the GVSU Mike Lints Open.
