Behind the Tape and Ice: Stories from AQ Sports Medicine

From Viral Moments to Emergency Calls: Life as an Athletic Trainer

Grand Rapids, Mich. — In the main feature celebrating Aquinas College's Sports Medicine and Athletic Training staff during National Athletic Training Month, the focus was on the dedication, expertise, and tireless commitment required to care for nearly 700 Saints student-athletes.

But behind the treatments, rehab plans, and long hours is another side of the profession — the stories.

Some are unbelievable.
Some are humorous.
And some serve as powerful reminders of just how unpredictable sports can be.

The moments shared here offer only a small glimpse into the experiences athletic trainers encounter every day. Many of the stories that truly define the profession are simply too graphic, too gory, or too personal to ever make it into print.

Still, a few are worth sharing.

Because sometimes the unexpected moments are the ones that stick with you the most.

As Aquinas Sports Medicine Department Head and Assistant Athletic Director Mackenzie Yob explains, those moments are simply part of life in the athletic training profession.

"People often see the tape jobs, the ice bags, and the routine parts of what we do," Yob said. "But over the course of a career, athletic trainers witness some truly unforgettable moments — some serious, some strange, and some that you can't help but laugh about years later."

When the Internet Was Just Getting Started

For Aquinas Head Athletic Trainer Matt McWilliams, one of the most unusual stories from his career dates back to his graduate school days — and to a moment that happened just as the internet was beginning to become part of everyday life.

"We had an athletic trainer from another program walk into Michigan Stadium — the Big House — when the doors were wide open," McWilliams recalled. "He was wearing red and black, which were our school colors."

That alone might not sound like much. But what happened next certainly was.

"He walked right onto the field and flipped off the Block 'M' at midfield," McWilliams said with a laugh.

Someone nearby snapped a photo of the moment and uploaded it online.

"And just like that," McWilliams said, "it went viral."

In an era before social media made viral moments common, the photo quickly spread — becoming one of those odd and unforgettable experiences athletic trainers still laugh about years later.

A First Game No Trainer Ever Forgets

For Assistant Athletic Trainer McKennah Hopkins, one of the most memorable moments in her career happened almost immediately after she became certified.

It was her first-ever game working as a certified athletic trainer, covering a sport she had never even seen played before.

Late in the game, an athlete went down with a serious injury — a fractured and dislocated ankle.

"I had to splint the leg and activate the emergency action plan," Hopkins said. "That meant calling EMS and managing the situation until they arrived."

For a new trainer, it was a moment that required calm decision-making and trust in the skills she had spent years learning.

"It was definitely the ultimate test of my skillset," she said. "But I think I handled the situation well."

Moments like that remind athletic trainers that no matter how routine a game might seem, they always have to be prepared for the unexpected.

The Reality of the Job

While some stories become memorable because of the circumstances, others stand out simply because they remind trainers how quickly sports can turn serious.

Assistant Athletic Trainer Olivia Capuano remembers one moment during a baseball game that perfectly illustrates that reality.

"I saw a baseball player take a foul ball directly to the face," Capuano said. "It shattered all of his upper facial bones."

It's the kind of situation most fans in the stands may not fully grasp in the moment — but for athletic trainers, it means immediate evaluation, quick decisions, and coordinating the proper medical response.

Moments like that are part of the reason athletic trainers must be prepared for anything.

Expect the Unexpected

If there is one thing athletic trainers learn quickly, it is that every game, practice, or training session carries the potential for the unexpected.

Some moments are serious.
Some are strange.
Some eventually become stories shared years later with a smile.

But every situation reinforces the same truth: athletic trainers must always be ready.

Ready to respond.
Ready to help.
Ready to care for the athletes who rely on them every single day.

And while the stories above may offer a glimpse into the unpredictable nature of the job, they represent only a small sample of the experiences athletic trainers encounter throughout their careers.

Because behind every practice, every game, and every championship moment is a professional prepared to handle whatever comes next.

And often, the stories they could tell are far more unbelievable than anything that ever makes it into print.
