Grand Rapids, Mich. — When the No. 1 and No. 3 teams in the NAIA meet for the second time in less than a month, there is nowhere to hide. Every possession matters, every clear is contested, every late rotation gets exposed, and the margin between brilliance and trouble is razor-thin.
That was the stage Saturday afternoon at the Aquinas Athletic Field, where Aquinas and Madonna once again gave the WHAC and the national men's lacrosse landscape a showcase worthy of the rankings.
For nearly three quarters, this was exactly what everyone hoped it would be — fast, physical, tactical, and played at a level that screamed May lacrosse in April. The Saints stood toe-to-toe with the No. 1 team in the country, trading momentum swings and proving once again they belong in the national championship conversation.
But against the nation's top-ranked team, one bad stretch can become an avalanche.
After AQ cut the deficit to 8-4 midway through the third, Madonna slammed the door with a dominant closing run and an explosive fourth quarter, turning what had been a heavyweight battle into a somewhat deceiving final score.
#1 Madonna 17, #3 Aquinas 4
The Saints opened the afternoon with the kind of poise expected from a top-three team.
After Madonna struck first, Ian Wright answered with an unassisted goal that immediately energized the home sideline. Moments later, Oliver Modderman buried a man-up finish off a Braeden Williams assist to give AQ an early 2-1 lead and send a clear message that this would not be a repeat of anything easy.
Even when the Crusaders reclaimed a 3-2 edge after the first quarter, Aquinas continued to answer. Braeden Williams ripped home the equalizer early in the second, and the Saints carried themselves with the confidence of a group fully capable of beating the No. 1 team in the nation.
At halftime, Madonna's lead was just 4-3, and the entire Aquinas Athletic Field felt the magnitude of the moment.
The third quarter, however, became the turning point.
Madonna pieced together a quick scoring burst to stretch the lead to 8-3, but even then AQ still had life. TJ Murphy delivered an unassisted goal at the 5:52 mark of the third to cut the margin back to four, keeping the Saints within striking distance and the crowd engaged.
From there, the Crusaders showed why they sit atop both the WHAC and the NAIA.
Madonna closed the game on a 9-0 run, including an 8-0 fourth quarter, completely shutting out the Saints in the final period and capitalizing on every late mistake. The final margin was lopsided, but anyone who watched understands this game was elite-level lacrosse for most of the afternoon before the nation's top team created separation.
Austin Hynote battled in goal and came up with several key saves during the tight first half, while Collin Wildman, Jake Koning, Cory Holmes, Joe Bryson, Tobin Brems, and William Larriuz all played meaningful roles in the possession battle, clears, and defensive rotations that kept AQ right there through the game's most competitive stretch.
Following the loss, Aquinas now stands at 10-2 overall and 6-2 in WHAC play, while Madonna improves to 13-1 overall and 9-0 in conference action.
Saints Snapshots
- National semifinal feel: For nearly three quarters, this had the pace, physicality, and execution of a May-level NAIA showdown.

- Perspective matters: AQ's only two losses this season have both come against the nation's top-ranked Madonna squad.
Coach's Comments
Head Coach Peter Treppa gave credit where it was due while keeping his team's focus firmly on the long view.
"Credit to Madonna, because they showed today why they're the No. 1 team in the country. I thought for a large portion of the game we played at the level we expect from ourselves and showed that we belong in these national-caliber match-ups. The second half exposed a few areas we have to clean up, especially when momentum starts to shift, but this is still a very good Aquinas team that simply had a bad stretch against an elite opponent. The response now is what matters. We get back to work, stay the course, and keep building."
Up Next
Coach Treppa will not allow his squad to dwell on the hard-fought loss. The Saints will regroup, practice with purpose, and refocus before returning to action on Wednesday.
Aquinas remains home to host Taylor, with the opening faceoff scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
The game will be streamed on the AQSaints YouTube Network, with Joey Sutherlin on the mic. If you can't be there, fortunately, we stream there.
