Grand Rapids, Mich. — Aquinas College has named Ryan Bertoia, longtime Head Men's Basketball Coach and 2006 AQ graduate, as the institution's Interim Athletic Director. The announcement was made by Dr. Terry Keller, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs.
"Ryan Bertoia's deep connection to Aquinas, both as an Aquinas graduate and longtime head coach, makes him uniquely qualified to step into this leadership role," said Dr. Keller. "His proven commitment to our student-athletes, his integrity, and his understanding of our mission as a Catholic institution position him well to guide the department during this important transition. We're grateful for his willingness to serve and confident that he will continue to build a culture rooted in excellence, accountability, and community."
Bertoia steps into the role following the departure of former Athletic Director Dr. Ron Reeves, who accepted a position as Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Leadership and Engagement at Oakland University. The search for a permanent AD is currently underway, with the goal of naming a new leader as early as September.
While serving as interim AD, Bertoia will remain in his head coaching role with the men's basketball program. His leadership style—shaped by years of mentorship from coaches and administrators alike—is grounded in relationships and pride in the AQ community.
"I've been incredibly fortunate to be mentored by some outstanding leaders throughout my journey," said Bertoia. "They taught me the value of building strong relationships, supporting others, taking pride in where you are, and striving for excellence. Those lessons guide me every day in this role."
Among the top priorities during his interim tenure are several major facility improvements, including a resurfaced basketball court, a new sound system in the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center Gymnasium, and a renovation of the indoor track inside the Alksnis Athletics & Recreation Center.
"There's still a sign in our men's basketball locker room that says 'Pay it Forward.' It's a mindset that's been passed down over the years, and it's the foundation not only of our basketball program but of our entire department," Bertoia added.
Despite the added administrative responsibilities, Bertoia remains deeply connected to coaching.
"Coaching remains my foundation, and our basketball program is still where I feel a deep sense of ownership and pride. I'm grateful to still be on the court every day, building something meaningful with our guys. My hope is that the pride we've cultivated within our program can extend throughout the department during this interim opportunity—and beyond."
Deputy Athletic Director Connor Leppink expressed his support for Bertoia's appointment.
"I'm truly excited to work alongside Ryan in this new capacity," said Leppink. "He brings a steady, student-centered leadership style that reflects the values of Aquinas and our athletic department. Ryan's vision and commitment will be a tremendous asset as we move forward together."
At a small college, the interim athletic director plays a crucial role in ensuring continuity and overseeing the department's daily operations. From managing budgets and schedules to leading staff and coaches, fostering strong communication, and aligning athletics with the college's mission—these responsibilities require a steady and capable team. Ryan Bertoia will lean on the experience and support of Deputy AD Connor Leppink, Assistant ADs Ashley Kaman, Mackenzie Yob, and Joey Sutherlin, as well as Manager of Operations Mary Takas. Together, this group is prepared to meet every challenge with the commitment, professionalism, and pride that define what it means to be a Saint.
As the AQ community continues this period of transition, Bertoia's experience, institutional pride, and strong leadership presence provide a steady hand at the helm of Aquinas Athletics.
