Defiance, Ohio — Even the Saints needed a chance to catch their breath. With a growing target on their backs, a schedule loaded with nationally ranked opponents and a record-breaking WHAC winning streak to protect, a little recovery time was well earned. But Saturday brought another test: Come back hungry, handle business and remind everyone that the Maroon and White are here for the long haul.
No. 6 Aquinas 3, Defiance 0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18)
Aquinas delivered its first message at the net, using three early blocks to establish control at the Karl H. Weaner Center. Natalie West and Jayla Martin combined for AQ's opening point before Martin joined Kate Schneider for consecutive rejections and a 3-1 lead. Defiance pulled even at 5-5, but Kaylyn Tuck supplied two kills around a Nevaeh Bakker solo block to help the Saints regain their footing. Sophie Munch added an ace, and West teamed with Bakker for another block as Aquinas moved ahead 11-7.
The separation came when AQ transformed a 14-11 advantage into a 21-11 cushion behind Kami Morse's serve. Schneider and Bakker combined for two blocks during that stretch, Cece Pelak delivered two kills, Morse added an ace and Tuck joined Bakker for another rejection. Pelak and Bakker supplied late kills before West finished the 25-14 victory off a Morse assist, with Defiance held to six kills and a minus-.154 hitting percentage.
The second set demanded more patience, with neither team creating much breathing room through an 8-8 tie. Pelak delivered the go-ahead kill, then served through three consecutive Defiance attack errors to give Aquinas a 12-8 lead. Schneider and Tuck added timely finishes, but the Yellow Jackets rallied to move ahead 18-16. Martin answered with consecutive kills, and West followed with an ace to put the Saints back in front.
Schneider took over down the stretch, recording kills for AQ's 20th, 21st and 22nd points as Defiance repeatedly pulled even. Her final kill broke a 21-21 tie and launched a four-point closing run that continued with Tuck finishing an Olivia Dennis set. West and Bakker followed with a block before Dennis set West for the clinching kill, securing a 25-21 win in a set featuring 13 ties and three lead changes.
Audrey Gil provided a spark in the third, putting away an early Schneider assist before adding two more kills to help Aquinas establish a 9-7 edge. Gil then served through five consecutive points, a stretch capped by a Bakker kill and a Gil ace for a 14-7 advantage. When Defiance trimmed the deficit to 16-12, Schneider responded with three of the Saints' next four points on kills to help stretch the lead to 20-13. Bakker and Gil combined for a block, Bakker added another kill and Pelak delivered AQ's final two kills, finishing the sweep off a Morse assist.
Schneider led the Saints' efficiency with 10 kills on 15 attempts without an error, hitting .667 and contributing five block assists. Pelak matched her with 10 kills and added 12 digs, while West supplied 32 assists, eight digs, three kills and three block assists. Morse anchored the back row with 20 digs, with Brooke Price adding five and Munch contributing four. Bakker finished with five kills and nine total blocks, Martin added four kills and four block assists, and Tuck supplied five kills in two sets. With Alexa Eden also appearing in all three sets and Gil producing three kills on four error-free swings, Aquinas used 12 players while holding Defiance to a minus-.008 hitting percentage.
The Saints improved to 30-1 overall and 11-0 in the WHAC, maintaining sole possession of first place ahead of Indiana Tech at 10-1 and Cornerstone at 9-2. Defiance slipped to 17-11 overall and 6-6 in conference play, remaining fourth in the WHAC standings. Aquinas' No. 6 national ranking is the highest in program history, and Saturday's sweep kept the Saints unbeaten in conference play.
The victory also secured a fourth consecutive 30-win season for Coach Ryan Campbell's program. After a 12-23 finish in 2022, Aquinas went 31-9 in 2023, 40-3 in 2024 and 33-7 in 2025 before reaching 30-1 this fall. Thirty wins once marked a breakthrough. Now they are another milestone on the way to what this group hopes comes next. Oh, by the way, the WHAC win streak is now 55.
Saints Snapshots
- The standard keeps rising. Four consecutive 30-win seasons tell the story of a program that has turned a remarkable turnaround into sustained success.
- The wall travels. Bakker had a hand in nine of AQ's 12 blocks, helping the Saints make every swing difficult and hold Defiance below .000 for the match.
- Schneider met the moment. Her error-free afternoon was impressive, but her three late kills in the second set carried particular weight when the Yellow Jackets threatened to change the match.
- Ready when called. Dennis helped orchestrate the second-set finish, Tuck delivered five kills and Gil brought an immediate third-set spark — contributions that helped keep the sweep on track.
- First place comes with company. Aquinas controls the WHAC race, but second-place Indiana Tech comes to Grand Rapids next weekend with an opportunity to challenge that position.
Coach's Comments
The lighter week gave Aquinas time to recover. Saturday offered a reminder that the closing stretch will still demand focus, patience and a response when opponents push back.
"The lighter week gave us a chance to recover physically and mentally, and that matters with the schedule we've played," Campbell said. "There were stretches today when we had to settle back in, but I liked how we responded when Defiance pushed us. Thirty wins is something this group should be proud of, but we still have a lot we want to accomplish. We need to use this practice time well, keep getting healthy and stay focused on the next match as we work toward playing our best volleyball in the postseason."
