Coach Terry Bocian AQ Athletic Hall of Fame
Terry Bocian spent 43 years at Aquinas College, including 38 years as Athletic Director, making him one of the longest serving athletic administrators in the country. Bocian has been inducted into four sports hall of fames: the Grand Rapids Catholic Central High School Hall of Fame (1995), National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Hall of Fame (2000), Grand Rapids Sports Hall of Fame (2004) and the Aquinas College Athletic Hall of Fame as a part of the 1974 baseball team (2014). He was also given the March of Dimes Warren Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004. In 2004, Bocian became the first Aquinas athletic department member in history of the college to have his number (#13) retired. He was the first Michigan college coach to record 1,000 victories in a single sport in a career, with a final baseball coaching record of 1,079 wins, 443 losses and 13 ties. Bocian coached the Saints' baseball team for 30 years and finished with 30 winning seasons and 30 playoff appearances. As an athletic director, Bocian grew the Saints' program from nine sports in 1978 to 25 sports today (500-plus student athletes). He was also instrumental in the fundraising and planning of the Sturrus Sports & Fitness Center, the Alksnis Athletics & Recreation Building and the lighted, artificial turf Aquinas College Athletic Field. The College named the Sturrus Center basketball court "Coach Bo Court" in his honor. Terry and his devoted wife, Karen raised four Saints (Theresa, Chad, Scott, and Matt) and are blessed with 11 wonderful grandchildren.
